Why “Royal” ?

Contrary to common belief, Royal Quinoa is not a particular specie of quinoa grown in Bolivia.  There are actually over 30 types of quinoa seeds that are sold as “quinua real” in the Bolivian market.  Generally, only the seeds that are of large size and are cream colored when washed are sold as “real,” which means either “true” or “royal” in Spanish.

The “quinua real” varieties only grow in the area surrounding the Bolivian salt flats, at 13,000 feet of altitude (often called the “intersalar” region).  The rich mineral soil and arid conditions produce a seed that is 1/3 larger than those produced in other regions of the world.

Traditionally, the quinoa from the “intersalar” region has commanded a premium amongst quinoa consumers.  During the Inca period, this quinoa was reserved for the royalty (who were also the high priests) and stocked to feed the armies in times of war.

Today, end-consumers are not aware of the type of quinoa they are eating nor where it is from.  There are many types of quinoas in the market, from small hybrids adapted to low-altitudes to large genetically-modified seeds.  The quinoa from the intersalar region needs to be differentiated and its identity preserved.

With the welfare of the Bolivian farmers and the end-consumers in mind, Andean Naturals has trademarked Royal Quinoa.  The Royal Quinoa brand belongs to all the farmers that farm in a particular region and under a set of guidelines designed to preserve the grain’s identity and the traditional agricultural practices that surround it (much like an appellation). Any farmer that produces under the Royal Quinoa guidelines can sell their quinoa using the brand- at no cost.

The following are the main defining traits :

  1. The quinoa is cultivated at an altitude of over 12,000 feet only the salt flats region of Bolivia

  2. Royal Quinoa seeds have remained the same for centuries- never hybridized or genetically modified

  3. The quinoa is planted and hand-harvested in small family farms

  4. The quinoa is cultivated organically and sustainably

  5. Royal quinoa must meet strict standards of purity and cleanliness

  6. Farmers receive a 8% premium over market prices for their crop
